You've probably heard the term AI agent.

Maybe you've seen someone say that AI agents are going to change business.

Maybe you've heard that an AI agent can perform tasks instead of simply answering questions.

Or maybe you've wondered:

What's the difference between an AI assistant and an AI agent?

It's a good question.

The simplest answer is this:

A chatbot usually waits for you to ask something. An AI agent can be designed to work toward a goal and take a series of actions to accomplish it.

That sounds simple.

But the difference could become important.

Think of an AI Assistant First

Imagine you have an assistant sitting at a desk.

You say:

"Give me five ideas for articles about artificial intelligence."

The assistant gives you five ideas.

You ask:

"Now write an outline for the first one."

The assistant creates the outline.

You ask:

Why Are People Excited About Agents?

Technology should solve a problem.

It shouldn't create a problem just because the technology is interesting.

You may use both.

An AI assistant might help you think through a problem.

An AI agent might handle part of the repetitive workflow.

You might then review the result with the assistant.

"Replace your entire business."

"One agent can do the work of ten people."

Be skeptical.

Some applications are genuinely useful.

Some are experimental.

Some are heavily marketed.

And some simply aren't ready to do what the advertisement suggests.
